Samsung Galaxy S8 Active shows off its rugged self

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is a rugged version of the Samsung Galaxy S8. We can expect the device to be certified to meet military specifications for drops and falls; the handset's IP68 certification rating allows the unit to be submerged in water as deep as nearly 5-feet for as long as 30-minutes, and emerge unscathed. Despite all of this protection, the phone should perform just as powerfully as the Samsung Galaxy S8 does, and once again the Active is an AT&T exclusive in the U.S.

Today, a picture of the Galaxy S8 Active surfaced. The image comes from the Wireless Power Consortium, the group behind the Qi wireless charging standard, and reveals that the phone is certified to employ Qi. Considering where the photo came from, it certainly seems as though this could be a genuine look at the phone. And as is usually the case with the Galaxy S Active model, some variations in appearance had to be made to accommodate the rugged nature of the device. For example, the picture shows that the curved edges of the Galaxy S8 have been straightened out, and the edge-to-edge display has been been replaced.

While most of the specs will remain the same, there could be a big hike in the capacity of the Galaxy S8 Active's battery. Last year, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active featured a 4000 mAh power source compared to the 3000mAh cell on the Galaxy S7. Something similar could take place again this year.

Besides the picture of the Galaxy S8 Active that accompanies this story, the Consortium also revealed that the phone will sport the model number of SM-G892A. The same model number recently appeared when the Galaxy S8 Active received its Wi-Fi certification. In fact, several leaks about the Galaxy S8 Active contained the very same model number.
