‘Elio’ Final Trailer: Pixar’s Off-World Buddy Alien Adventure Arrives In Theaters On June 20

Announcing that tickets are on sale for their new film “Elio,” Walt Disney Studios and Pixar have sent over a new trailer for the animated sci-fi adventure that sees a lonely young child strike an unlikely friendship with an alien after the imaginative space fanatic human is mistaken as a diplomatic representative of Earth, it’s leader.

“Elio” hails from an impressive trio of directors that are Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow”), Domee Shi (“Bao” short, “Turning Red”), and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of “Coco”) with a voice cast that features Yonas Kibreab as Elio, recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Elio’s new alien pal Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa, and Shirley Henderson as Ooooo.

An official synopsis courtesy of Disney:

The cosmic misadventure that introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. When Elio is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.

Disney is coming off the massive success of their live-action “Lilo & Stitch” film that earned a gargantuan $341.7 million at the global box office over the Memorial Day weekend and could help illustrate the audience demand for more family-friendly options as Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ “Zootopia 2” is another animated effort coming out in the fall.

This new animated adventure comes after Pixar saw solid success later year with “Inside Out 2” earning $1.7 billion. However, with “Elio” being a new Disney property (thank goodness, Pixar isn’t only churning out endless sequels like “Toy Story 5“), it’s unclear if a general audience is going to bite. Hopefully, they will because the concept and look of the film are ADOREABLE, and Pixar’s appeal should never be underestimated.
