The smartphone market always moves at a breakneck speed, and this means that there is a lot of innovation happening every year, even if we don't see it in smartphones. For the longest time, smartphone makers are slowly shifting towards 1-inch primary camera sensors, and while the benefits are obvious, this adoption is taking longer than anticipated, with big companies like Samsung still shying away. It now appears that the South Korean has allegedly started working on a 1-inch camera sensor, but we might not be seeing it next year.
Galaxy S25 Ultra could finally bring a 1-inch camera sensor made in-house by Samsung
Based on a tip from a reliable source, Samsung has finally started working on a 1-inch primary camera sensor. Not a lot of information is available at the moment, but the source did share some key specifications, which indicate that the sensor is going to be capable of delivering some serious photography prowess.

In a separate tweet, the source shared the specs for the new Samsung sensor, which will be 1/0.98, 200MP, 0.8μm H/V DPAF, 4x ISZ. Now, 1-inch phone sensors aren't exactly 1-inch, so this makes sense, and considering how the company has always been focusing on delivering high megapixel-count, the 200-megapixel resolution makes a lot of sense.
Sadly, we will not be seeing this sensor in the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra. Past rumors have indicated that the Galaxy S25 series will be receiving a camera upgrade across the board, so if this rumor is indeed correct, you can expect the Galaxy S25 Ultra to bring this camera onboard.
This is all the detail we have available at the moment, but considering how Samsung normally announces its sensors before they are even available on devices, we could see the official announcement sometime next year with more details coming forward. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as more information surfaces.
